The French Dip originated in LA nearly 100 years ago. Invented by Phillipe Matthieu in 1918 at his deli, which is still open to this day. One morning, making a sandwich for a local policeman, Phillipe dropped the man’s roll into a pan of roast dripping – the officer decided to take it anyway. It turned out he liked the sandwich so much that he came back the next day with all of his buddies for ‘the dipped sandwich’. The French Dip was born.
