The Jodcast Presents… Alex Clarke

Hi, I’m Alex Clarke (@alexowenclarke) and I’ve just completed my PhD at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. I study other galaxies with radio telescopes! We’re fairly sure that all galaxies have supermassive black holes at their centres, and I look for unique ones where they are producing radio jets. In some spectacular cases these jets extend for millions of light years beyond the host galaxy (our Milkyway is only 100,000 light years across!). So the effect of one supermassive black hole in the centre of a galaxy has profound effects reaching out into the space far beyond the host galaxy itself.
