22-25 July 2021 Jodrell Bank Observatory

Welcome to bluedot with Tim O’Brien

Tim O’Brien is a Professor of Astrophysics and an Associate Director of Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at The University of Manchester.

Tim has published around 150 research papers, mainly on the study of thermonuclear explosions on white dwarf stars in binary systems. He has used a wide range of telescopes around the world and in space, including the e-MERLIN radio telescopes operated from Jodrell Bank, X-ray satelites, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope in Chile. Most recently, he has begun work on the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence using radio telescopes (he hasn’t found any yet).

Alongside Teresa Anderson, Tim co-curates the science elements of the bluedot programme and will be contributing in various ways throughout this year’s festival including introducing acts, chairing panel discussions and debating with other scientists and thinkers. Look out for his popular Main Stage talks involving multimedia presentations and live link-ups with scientists across the world.

Join us on the Lovell Stage on Thursday evening as Tim opens the festival.
